Struthers, Ohio – The No. 3 Nebraska bowling team will kick off the 2023-24 season this weekend, competing at the fourth-annual Motiv Penguin Classic, hosted by No. 6 Youngstown State at Holiday Bowl.
In their second appearance at the tournament, the Huskers are looking to defend their title after a 13-1 dominant performance in their inaugural showing last season.
The teams joining the Huskers include six of the top 25 teams in the nation ranked by the National Tenpin Coaches Association (NTCA): No. 2 Arkansas State, No. 6 Youngstown State, No. 11 Duquesne, No. 25 Morgan State, No. 16 Mercyhurst and No. 19 Central Missouri. Bryant, Lewis, Niagara, Saint Francis (Pa.), Valparaiso and Wright State round out the remaining 13 teams competing.
“We are excited to get back to competition and to kick off the 2023-24 season,” said Head Coach Paul Klempa. “The team has been working hard and looks forward to testing their work with some quality competition in Ohio this weekend.”
The Huskers will be led by returning members: 2023 Rookie of the Year and First-Team All-American Jillian Martin, Second-Team Rookie Honoree Anna Callan and Alexis Buchert as well as a deepened roster with fresh faces to the team.
The first ball will be thrown Friday morning at 8:35 a.m. (CT) with five sets of five-game Baker matches. The tournament continues with five traditional matches Saturday morning, beginning at 8:25 a.m. (CT). The combined results from Friday and Saturday will determine seeding for Sunday’s bracket-play championship tournament. Each team will play an additional three rounds of five-game Baker matches, followed by a final best-of-seven Baker matches beginning at 7:25 a.m. (CT).
