An update from the Nebraska Emergency Management Agency announced that the Betty’s Way Fire that began on Monday, February 26th has totaled 71,022 acres of land and two primary residences have been destroyed.
The update comes a day later, announcing that the fire was human caused due to mowing operations.
At 10:32 AM on February 26th, North Platte 911 center received a call reporting a wildfire from a resident on Betty’s Way, which is located 8.6 miles northeast of North Platte. North Platte Fire Department responded with three stations and arrived on scene in 12 minutes, establishing immediate suppression tactics and naming the fire. They requested mutual aid from fifteen volunteer fire districts.
The fire grew rapidly due to the wind and ripe conditions and evacuations were ordered. According to the release, no injuries have been reported.
As of February 27th, fire managers are working on assessing the work performed and should expect some containment issued later in the day. Two primary residences and numerous outbuildings have been destroyed. Officials are working with farmers, ranchers and residents to address any needs they have.
Region 51 Emergency Management ordered additional support from fire departments and Nebraska IMT began their operations on Tuesday morning to assist. The Nebraska National Guard and Nebraska State Patrol are assisting with aerial support and drone needs as well.
