Broadway writers Sue Fabisch Ericco and Johnny Rodgers welcomed musical goers to Fox Theatre Tuesday to preview their upcoming production The North Platte Canteen: A Musical Miracle. Setting to the early 1940s, 26-year-old Rae Wilson hearing that her brother’s troop train would be making a stop in their hometown of North Platte, Nebraska.
She organized a group of ladies to welcome the boys with food and gifts for their long journey off to war. But a different train without her brother arrived instead, and Rae’s decision to welcome these young men and women transformed her generosity into a four-and-a-half year phenomenon.
The one-hour special included a few songs from the performance, the story behind the inspiration for the musical, and a timeline of their work on the show. The two writers hosted a meet and greet to end the day. Tickets will be on sale in the next few weeks with performances being on September 27, 28, 29, and October 4, 5, 6.
