Sept. 27, 2024 (Lincoln, Neb.) — Governor Jim Pillen, along with the Nebraska Department of
Transportation (NDOT), announces the launch of a new initiative to enhance cultural recognition
and inclusivity on roadways within exterior boundaries of a reservation. The Native American Dual
Language Signing Policy and Procedure describes how to request traffic signs displaying both English
and Native languages, reinforcing the governor’s commitment to honoring the cultural heritage of
federally recognized tribes in Nebraska. Discussions for this initiative began at the 2024 Tribal
Transportation Conference held this spring.
“The Dual Language Signing Program is our effort to honor Nebraska’s Native American tribes,” said
Gov. Pillen. “By adding Native languages to traffic signs, we are supporting efforts to preserve Native
languages as well as fostering community and respect. This initiative strengthens our ties with tribal
governments and reflects our state’s rich culture of diversity.”
Tribal representatives can access the new policy on the NDOT website (ndot.info/Dual-Language-Traffic-Signs).
NDOT will review eligibility, provide approved sign designs and cost estimates, and coordinate the fabrication and
installation of approved signs.
