North Platte, Neb. – The North Platte Airport Authority held a groundbreaking ceremony for the North Platte – New Places terminal development project on Tuesday, kicking off a project intended to enhance the customer experience at the airport and drive economic development opportunities to western Nebraska.
The airport’s existing terminal, constructed in 1952, is no longer able to meet the demands of modern travelers. Additionally, the security checkpoint and baggage screening room in the existing building are constrained and unable to accommodate preferred Transportation Security Administration (TSA) equipment. A new facility is needed to keep up with airport safety and security standards and keep airline service viable in North Platte.
The new 24,600-square-foot facility showcases a bipartisan commitment to sustainable and resilient infrastructure in rural communities. The airport received $7.04 million for the project through the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law Airport Terminals Program, and an additional $7 million in Congressionally Directed Spending supported by U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb). The new terminal, designed by HDR, will feature mass timber construction, photovoltaic glass, geothermal heating and cooling, stormwater capture and reuse, and accommodations for multi-modal transportation. It will provide amenities that align with the expectations of today’s airport users, including jet bridge boarding, modern restrooms, natural light, and food and beverage options before and after security.
“Investing in modern infrastructure keeps Nebraska a wonderful place to live for the next generation. I was proud to secure $7 million for North Platte’s new terminal project, which will position the region for continued growth,” said Senator Fischer.
The Airport Authority has awarded Sampson Construction of Lincoln, Nebraska a $29.6 million construction contract for the project. The new facility is expected to open in spring 2026. The current terminal facility will remain operational during construction, resulting in minimal impact to the traveling public.
