Hannah Kono finished 16th with a collegiate career-best three-round total of 218 (+2) to lead the Nebraska women’s golf team to a tie for seventh at the Hurricane Invitational in Coral Gables, Fla., on Tuesday.
Kono, a sophomore from Enkoping, Sweden, put together consistent rounds of 73, 72 and 73 on the par-72, 6,175-yard layout at the Biltmore Golf Club. Kono’s 16th-place finish was her best of the fall for the Huskers, surpassing a tie for 18th at the season-opening Badger Invitational when she shot her previous season-best 224. She missed a top-10 finish by just one stroke at the Hurricane Invitational.
Kono’s 218 was five strokes better than her previous career-best 223, which came at Eastern Michigan’s Shirley Spork Invitational last fall when she was a freshman at Oakland University in Michigan.
Nebraska true freshman Eden Lohrbach also produced a strong finish to her fall campaign by leading the Huskers with an even-par 72 in Tuesday’s final round. Lohrbach climbed 10 spots into a tie for 29th in the final standings with a 54-hole total of 223 (+7).
Lohrbach finished one stroke ahead of redshirt sophomore teammate Lauren Thiele, who closed the tournament at 224 (+8) after a final-round 75.
Senior Miu Takahashi completed Nebraska’s final-round team total of 297 (+9) with her 77 (+5) to tie for 41st place alongside Husker Arden Louchheim, who was playing as an individual outside the Husker lineup at the tournament. Louchheim also carded a 77 (+5) on Tuesday to finish at 227 (+11).
Fifth-year senior Andrea Velez rounded out the Husker contingent in a tie for 44th in a 63-player field at 228 (+12) including a final-round 78 (+6).
The hosts from Miami ran away with the team title by posting a three-round total of 852 (-12), 19 shots better than second-place Florida Gulf Coast’s 871 (+7). South Alabama finished one shot back of FGCU at 872, while Iowa took fourth at 878 (+14).
Nebraska tied for seventh with Florida Atlantic at 888 (+24), just four shots back of fifth-place North Florida (884) and three strokes behind sixth-place Florida International (885).
Miami’s Olivia Gronborg fired a final-round 69 to claim the individual title at 208 (-8), two shots ahead of Eastern Michigan’s Savannah de Bock (210).
Nebraska will return to action in Florida at the UCF Challenge (Feb. 2-4) to open the spring portion of its 2024-25 schedule.
